Some of the issues that teens considered for participation in
Leadership CONNECTIONS should include a desire to:
- Improve their academic
- Increase their PSA/SAT scores
- Manage their dscipline wisely
- Improve their interest in school
- Improve their self-esteem
- Enhance their overall school
- Tap into their unchallenged
- Be recognized for their talents
- Showcase their untapped
The teens are also identified through a
collaborative effort among the Council's Region Directors, school
counselors, Juvenile Court personnel, youth agencies, churches and
civic organizations. A culturally diverse group of 14 to 17 year
old at-risk female teens are selected from across North Carolina.
Each year, the selection process yields participants who meet one or
more of the selection criteria.
The participants have demonstrated,
since the creation of Leadership CONNECTIONS in 1991, that they represent
an untapped source of future leadership. Each brought unique
contributions to the retreats. All profile information is based on
attendance at the 1998 and 1999 retreats and trainings including the
Young Woman's Advisory Team.
