"Don't ever allow anyone to steal your dreams"  -----Katherine Harrelson

Established in 1991, Leadership CONNECTIONS, Inc. is an award-winning, statewide educational program that targets the special needs of young women, ages 14-17.  The program empowers young women who become involved by providing experiences that foster active learning in a participative environment.  Important aspects of the program are:

Leadership Basics and Character Education

Philanthropic Leadership and Civic Responsibility

3-Tier Mentoring Support Services

The popular summer "College Experience" retreat

Inter-generational Networking

Leadership CONNECTIONS uses the positive features of the participant's personality, enabling them to make good decisions concerning the workplace, the community, and their overall development as a person.  The information is introduced in a variety of methods, each selected to optimize understanding and retention by the participants.  Presentation formats will utilize demonstrations, hands-on experiential learning, motivational speakers, educational videos, simulated games, guided writing assignments, community service assignments, structured training and feedback retreats.

Monique Lynch (L), a Leadership CONNECTIONS graduate, became Roanoke Valley Jr. Miss, poses with Former Miss N.C. Michelle Warren at our Awards Banquet.

The mission of this year-round program, which culminates into a summer college experience, is to help female teens develop:

An understanding of community service as philanthropic giving

Workplace and career leadership skills

A uniquely defined and healthy self-image

A personal goal for health, nutrition wellness and substance abuse prevention

This objective continues to be achieved through implementation of creative activities, interactive learning and collaboration with mentors, college students, and gifted peers, resulting in positive behavioral and attitudinal changes.

My Burden is now so much lighter,

I've glimpsed things I needed to see,

I have a fresh hope for tomorrow,

Because someone listened to me.  ----                             Egner

Thank you for visiting our program’s website. I hope that readers will be inspired by the talent and milestones reached by participants; and the connections they have made to support them and their future.

My childhood dream was to have mentors and role models who would understand and respect my learning style. Although there were obstacles to overcome and stumbling blocks along the way, I always managed to find people who cared. Even when climbing the rough side of the mountains, a helping hand would always reach down for me. In my small hometown of Milton, North Carolina, there was 4-H. Belonging to a 4-H club made a world of difference in my life. Therefore, when I was old enough to make a difference

in others lives, I dreamed of a leadership program that would address the needs of young women and connect them to programs and resources beneficial to their total well-being. Thirteen years ago, my dream became a reality, thanks to the Women’s Bureau, US Department of Labor, who provided a small grant to pilot the program; and a group of committed adult volunteers, many of whom are still with us today.

Empowering young women through self-esteem building, creative leadership training and exposure to supportive career, peer and social role models provides us with a large pool of graduates who are now in college.  They voluntarily manage the program with adult supervision; and they support incoming participants by developing peer e-mentoring projects that have been very successful. 88% of graduates go on to institutions of higher learning.

As adults, if we truly listen to our young, we can help them channel their energy in a direction that will be positively rewarding for communities, states, the nation and the world. Funding is not always there, but volunteers are.

Thank you for your time, and please feel free to e-mail us your questions, suggestions or comments.

Sincerely,

Katherine L. Harrelson, Founder & Advisor
